The Internet mass medium named "CAUCASIAN KNOT" was founded by the International Society "Memorial" in 2001. Since 2008, the Limited Liability Company (LLC) "MEMO" is the founder of the "CAUCASIAN KNOT".
The main aims of the "CAUCASIAN KNOT" are to ensure free access to truthful and non-engaged information about events in the Caucasus; inform the Russian and global community about violations of human rights, situation in armed conflict zones, cases of ethnic or political discrimination and refugees' problems; and provide information support to promotion of civil initiatives and independent mass media.
The Internet medium "CAUCASIAN KNOT" is notable for its human rights orientation, encyclopaedic depth off its materials and presentation of different viewpoints. We are publishing actual data on the present-day life in the Caucasus, about events and processes that take place and develop in the region, including materials of local mass media, documents and legislative acts, reference data about the history, ethnic groups and religious and cultural traditions of the region, scientific literature, analytical reviews and comments, data on non-governmental organizations, political and public figures and regional mass media.
Visitors of the "CAUCASIAN KNOT" can get acquainted with exclusive materials and interviews, prepared by own regional correspondents of the edition, who are working in Abkhazia, Adjaria, Adygeia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Astrakhan and Volgograd region, Georgia, Dagestan, Ingushetia,Kabardino-Balkaria, Kalmykia, Karachaevo-Cherkesia, Krasnodar region, Nagorny Karabakh, Rostov region, North Ossetia - Alania, Stavropol region,Chechnya and South Ossetia, as well as by employees and activists of the International Society "Memorial".
Since March 20, 2012, the "CAUCASIAN KNOT" had introduced rating of registered readers who regularly comment on the publications. According to the data of April 2012, more than 12,000 commentators were included in rating.
The materials of the edition are structured into 7 main sections (rubrics) and 19 sub-sections; the most dynamic of which is the "News" section: its news tape is daily publishing 70 to 100 news items. All the sections are equipped with a search engine covering 11 basic topics and 19 regions of Northern and Southern Caucasus. Since August 2003, the English-language version of the "CAUCASIAN KNOT" is in operation. Starting January 2009, the edition operates its new interactive services: the forum, author's blogs and the video blog of the "CAUCASIAN KNOT". The photo album, where author's photos from the regions of the Caucasus are placed, is regularly replenished.
Besides, the "CAUCASIAN KNOT" is implementing the following special projects: "Northern Caucasus in Bloggers' Eyes" (in partnership with the BBC Russian Service), "Maps of Peaceful Caucasus" (in cooperation with the Yandex), "Weather in 49 cities of the Caucasus" (jointly with the Simulation Laboratory of General Atmosphere Circulation and Climate of the Russian Hydro-Meteorological Centre), and the project assuming taking a series on interviews from the presidents of the republics of Northern Caucasus and countries of Southern Caucasus (in partnership with the Internet edition "Gazeta.Ru"), and provides its readers with the gadgets-applications for easy work with the Dagestani page of the "CAUCASIAN KNOT".
The main partners of the "CAUCASIAN KNOT" are: the Institute of Human Rights, the "Panorama" Information and Research Centre, website bbcrussian.com and Internet medium "Gazeta.Ru". The edition is funded from various charitable foundations. The "CAUCASIAN KNOT" has its Registration Certificate: El No. 77-31048 of January 21, 2008, issued by the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications (ROSKOMNADZOR).
In June 2007, the "Caucasian Knot" was awarded the Prize "Free Press of Eastern Europe" named after Gerd Bucerius, established by the German weekly "Zeit" and the Norwegian Foundation "Fritt ord" (Free Word) for support of the freedom of speech and civil society.
In 2009, the "Caucasian Knot" was awarded the Prize of the Union of Journalists of Russia "For Defending the Interests of Professional Community" for a series of materials in defence of journalists' rights.
On March 13, 2012, in the city of Vlaardingen (the Netherlands), the Editor-in-Chief of the "Caucasian Knot" was awarded the Medal Geuzenpenning for 2011 to honour the activities of conquering information barriers and dissemination of information with the situation with human rights.
The ‘Caucasian Knot’ correspondents operate out of 20 regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District, South Federal District and South Caucasus.
