Elchin Shikhly: "Mirror" suspends its activities in Azerbaijan because of financial problems

In Azerbaijan, the publication of the newspaper "Mirror" has been suspended because of financial problems, and the suspension is not associated with the prosecution against journalist Rauf Mirkadirov. This was announced by Elchin Shikhly, the newspaper's editor-in-chief. According to him, the fate of the newspaper remains uncertain, and the newspaper's staff members are on unpaid leaves. However, they still continue to support the online version of the newspaper.

The publication of the newspaper has been suspended a month after its journalist Rauf Mirkadirov was arrested.

After that, the newspaper first switched from daily to weekly release, and on May 31, the last issue of the newspaper was released.

According to Emin Guseinov, Director of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS), many independent media experience financial difficulties in Azerbaijan.

"The independent media has virtually no income from advertising. Under such conditions, the only income is the proceeds from sale. However, in recent years, infrastructure of retail sales has reduced," said Emin Guseinov in the conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to Emin Guseinov, under the current circumstances, the independent media not associated with any political force appear to be in the worst position.
